Program Director:
Dr. Scott Plotkin

The MGH/DFCI/BWH Neuro-Oncology Fellowship program represents a jointly recruited cohort of trainees in Neuro- Oncology at the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (DFCI), and the Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH). The Neuro-Oncology programs at these three institutions joined in 2003 to establish a combined training program. During the academic year starting on July 1, 2014, there will be three new Neuro-Oncology Fellows in the joint program. First-year fellows will alternate two-month blocks between MGH and DFCI/BWH. During these rotations, fellows will engage in the management of neuro-oncology patients in both inpatient and outpatient settings, with a focus on learning management of primary brain tumors, metastatic brain tumors, and complications of chemotherapy. As of June 30, 2014, we will have over 23 graduates from our program.

A number of faculty members have translational science components to their research. The size of these laboratories varies depending on the funding of the faculty member. Second- and third-year fellows are encouraged to work with these faculty members if they wish to develop a career in translational research. All members of the faculty and fellowship have full access to the Harvard library system which is one of the largest in the world. This access provides both print journal collections and web access to a large number of electronic journals.

Fellows meet with the fellowship director on a quarterly basis and are formally evaluated by the faculty semi-annually. A structured questionnaire is disseminated to the faculty to gather information on the following topics: patient care, medical knowledge, interpersonal and communication skills, professionalism, and systems-based practice.
